Funafuti

Swimming at Amatuku

World War Two came to the then British colony of the Ellice Islands when Allied, mostly American, forces occupied Funafuti, Nukufetau, and Nanumea Atolls, building air strips, blasting shipping channels, and transforming Tuvalu forever. Japanese aircraft bombed Nanumea and Funafuti several times. Today, one of the bomb craters near the northern Funafuti motu (islet) of Amatuku serves as a swimming spot.
