Tuvalu: Pacific islanders fear the rains
Tuvalu - a tiny island country in the south-west Pacific about 600
miles north of Fiji - was spared the devastation of the Indian Ocean tsunami,
but is still gravely threatened by rising sea level and other climatic dangers
like fresh water shortages.
If sea levels keep rising the islanders face a future as environmental refugees.
In the meantime they are grappling with unwelcome changes to their diet and
lifestyle.

Dr Hayes, an Australian journalism academic, spent November, 2004, on
Funafuti Atoll, Tuvalu, working with journalists from Radio Tuvalu. His visit
was part-funded by a Queensland University of Technology community service
grant.
