THREE TUVALU GIRLS BURNED IN SCHOOL FIRE TO BE
TREATED IN FIJI
FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (March 14, 2000 – Radio Australia)---At least three survivors
of a school fire in Tuvalu last Thursday will be flown to Fiji for treatment.
Eighteen girls and a supervisor died in the blaze after fire swept through the
girl's dormitory at Motufoua Secondary School on Vaitupu island.
Another 18 girls survived the fire by smashing down a door but some of them were
injured or suffered the effects of smoke inhalation.
Fiji's Deputy Prime Minister Tupeni Baba says Fiji has agreed to treat those who
cannot be attended to in Tuvalu.
