TUVALU RECEIVES OFFERS OF SUPPORT FOLLOWING FIRE
DEATHS
FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (March 11, 2000 – Radio Australia)---The
Tuvalu government has received offers of support from countries in the
Asia-Pacific region following a fire which killed 19 people.
Eighteen schoolgirls and a matron died when a blaze broke out at a school on the
atoll of Vaitapu.
The Tuvalu High Commissioner’s office in Suva noted that offers of assistance
already had been received from Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Papua New
Guinea.
A two-day mourning period was declared as the government begun an official
investigation into the disaster.
