JAPAN GRANT TO TUVALU FOR ROAD EQUIPMENT

FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (February 29, 2000 Ė Fijiís Daily Post)---Japan has approved a grant of US$ 83,000 for the Public Works Department in Tuvalu for the purchase of a road roller.

Contracts formalizing the grant were signed last month by Japan's Ambassador Hisato Murayama and Tuvalu's Acting High Commissioner to Fiji Solofa Uota.

The new Sakai SV510/IE road roller will replace the current road roller in Funafuti, which is about 20 years old.

This old machine is well past its useful economical life and is proving to be too expensive to maintain.

The new road roller will be larger and will be used by the Public Works Department for the maintenance of existing roads in Tuvalu and for the construction of new roads.

The road roller will also help in the maintenance of the Funafuti airfield runaway.
