TUVALU PRIME MINISTER VISITS OUTER ISLANDS
FUNAFUTI, Tuvalu (May 14, 1998 - PACNEWS/Ioane)---Tuvalu's Prime Minister, Bikenibeu Paeniu, is visiting the Polynesian nation's outer islands to introduce residents to his newly-formed government and its activities.
Thursday, Paeniu and his delegation visited Nanumea island before going on to Nanumanga island, Radio Tuvalu reports.
The government group is providing local island authorities and community representatives with information about the Funafuti government's national development plans.
The delegation also is discussing proposed amendments to the constitution, implementation of the Falekaupule Act and establishment of the Falekaupule Trust Fund.
The Falekaupule Act, a law passed by Parliament last December, allows local governments to participate actively in implementing national programs and projects to enhance managerial, technical and administrative skills.
The Falekaupule Trust Fund's main objective is to generate financial resources for development projects in the Tuvalu islands' communities.
Accompanying the Prime Minister is Deputy Prime Minister Kokea Malua and several senior government officials.
